The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday marked the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day through his representation at the annual parade and wreath-laying ceremony held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, represented the governor at the solemn event, which brought together top government officials, military and paramilitary officers, veterans, and members of the public to honour Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives in the course of defending the nation’s sovereignty and preserving peace, both at home and abroad. It also serves as a moment of reflection on the price paid for the freedoms and unity Nigerians enjoy today.
During the ceremony, wreaths were laid in honour of fallen soldiers who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions across Africa, and ongoing internal security operations. The symbolic act underscored the nation’s gratitude to those who paid the ultimate price in service to Nigeria.
In his message, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to supporting members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and families of fallen heroes. He emphasized that the courage, patriotism, and selflessness displayed by the nation’s military personnel must never be forgotten and should continue to inspire present and future generations.
The governor noted that Armed Forces Remembrance Day is not only a time to mourn the fallen but also an opportunity to renew collective resolve toward building a peaceful, united, and prosperous Nigeria, worthy of the sacrifices made by its heroes.
The ceremony concluded with military parades and prayers for national peace, security, and continued strength for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
