Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed that the vision of a greater Lagos extends beyond physical infrastructure, stressing the importance of environmental sustainability and collective responsibility in shaping the state’s future.
Speaking ahead of a major environmental initiative scheduled to commence tomorrow morning, the governor noted that while significant investments have been made in roads, bridges, and rail systems, true development must also prioritize the health and cleanliness of the environment. According to him, building a modern city is not only about expanding infrastructure but also about creating a livable and sustainable space for residents.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that environmental care is a shared duty that requires active participation from all Lagosians. He pointed out that issues such as waste management, flooding, and pollution can only be effectively addressed when citizens, communities, and government agencies work together. The upcoming exercise, he explained, marks a renewed commitment to restoring and maintaining environmental standards across the state.
The governor described the initiative as a “return” to core values of civic responsibility and environmental consciousness. He highlighted that the effort will involve coordinated actions across various sectors, including sanitation, drainage clearing, and public awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging better environmental practices.
Officials say the exercise will focus on improving waste disposal systems, clearing blocked drainage channels, and reducing environmental hazards that often contribute to flooding, especially during the rainy season. The move is also expected to enhance public health by reducing the spread of diseases linked to poor sanitation.
In addition, the government plans to strengthen enforcement of environmental laws while continuing to educate residents on the importance of proper waste management and sustainable living. Community engagement will play a central role, with local groups and volunteers encouraged to participate actively in the cleanup efforts.
Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that environmental sustainability is essential for the long-term growth of Lagos as a megacity. They stressed that maintaining a clean and healthy environment not only improves quality of life but also boosts tourism and investment.
As the state prepares to launch the exercise, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to take ownership of their surroundings and support the initiative. He reiterated that achieving a greater Lagos requires a collective effort—one that balances infrastructure development with environmental stewardship.
The planned “return” signals a renewed focus on sustainability, reinforcing the idea that the future of Lagos depends not just on what is built, but also on how well the environment is preserved.
