
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has congratulated the Nigerian Navy on its 70th anniversary, describing the institution as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s security architecture and a key partner in safeguarding the nation’s economic interests.
The governor spoke while attending the Ceremonial Sunset, Dinner and Awards Night held at the Naval Dockyard Limited in Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Navy’s platinum jubilee celebration.
Sanwo-Olu noted that for seven decades, the Nigerian Navy has remained steadfast in its responsibility of protecting the country’s territorial waters and maritime resources. He said the service has consistently demonstrated professionalism, courage and dedication in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its waterways.
According to the governor, Lagos State shares a long-standing and historic relationship with the Navy due to its strategic coastal location and status as Nigeria’s commercial hub. He emphasized that the Navy’s role extends beyond security operations, as its presence significantly contributes to the protection of maritime trade, ports and economic activities that drive national development.
Sanwo-Olu praised serving officers, ratings and veterans of the Navy for their sacrifices and unwavering commitment to duty, noting that their efforts have strengthened national security and promoted stability across the country.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Navy in combating maritime crimes, protecting critical infrastructure and supporting economic growth through a secure maritime environment.
The governor expressed confidence that the Nigerian Navy would continue to uphold its tradition of excellence and service to the nation in the years ahead.
He congratulated the military institution on reaching the significant milestone, describing its 70 years of service as a remarkable achievement worthy of celebration and national recognition.
