The Youth Bureau has commended former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, for advocating broader grassroots engagement and the inclusion of different segments of society in political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Publicity Secretary of the group, Adekunle Adeosun, said Fashola’s remarks at the recent South-West All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos highlighted the importance of taking political engagement beyond party leaders and involving ordinary people in conversations about governance and national development.
At the meeting organised by the South-West Directorate of Stakeholders Mobilisation of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Fashola called for stronger engagement with artisans, community leaders, trade groups, newly registered voters and other stakeholders.
He also proposed the establishment of engagement committees across states, local government areas and wards to strengthen communication and coordination at the grassroots.
Adeosun described the proposal as a useful reminder that young people and community stakeholders should not be treated merely as participants during election periods but should have opportunities to contribute to public discussions throughout the political process.
He noted that young Nigerians, artisans, traders, professionals and community-based groups have different concerns and expectations that deserve attention when political and development priorities are being discussed.
The Youth Bureau also welcomed Fashola’s emphasis on understanding voter apathy, noting that meaningful civic participation requires listening to citizens, understanding their concerns and creating opportunities for informed engagement.
According to Adeosun, political mobilisation becomes more meaningful when it involves genuine conversations, accessible information and continuous interaction with communities.
He said the proposed grassroots structures could provide opportunities for young people to engage with political stakeholders, express their expectations and become more involved in discussions about education, employment, skills development, security and economic opportunities.
The group further noted that the involvement of representatives from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti at the meeting showed the importance of regional consultation and cooperation.
The Youth Bureau urged political stakeholders to sustain the spirit of engagement beyond election preparations, stressing that young people should be recognised as active contributors to democratic development and not simply as a mobilisation tool.
Adeosun said the group believes that inclusive political conversations, civic awareness and sustained grassroots participation are important to building a more responsive democratic culture.
The Youth Bureau reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging youth participation, leadership development and constructive engagement in issues affecting communities across Lagos State and Nigeria.
