The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to improve the safety and efficiency of telecommunications infrastructure across the state through a major cleanup exercise targeting abandoned and defective telecom installations. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), and key stakeholders within the telecommunications industry.
The cleanup operation is aimed at removing abandoned cables, damaged fibre installations, unused poles, and other telecom infrastructure considered unsafe or environmentally harmful. Authorities say the exercise has become necessary due to the growing number of neglected telecom facilities scattered across different parts of Lagos, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Officials explained that poorly maintained telecom installations not only affect the city’s appearance but also pose safety risks to residents. In some cases, fallen cables and damaged poles have disrupted traffic movement, caused accidents, and created hazards during heavy rainfall and flooding. The government believes that cleaning up the infrastructure will help improve public safety while supporting the state’s broader urban renewal efforts.
Speaking on the initiative, representatives of LASIMRA emphasized the need for stronger compliance with infrastructure regulations among telecommunications companies operating in Lagos. They stated that operators are expected to maintain their facilities properly and remove outdated installations that are no longer in use. According to the agency, stricter monitoring mechanisms will now be introduced to ensure compliance across the sector.
The NCC also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the exercise, noting that efficient telecom infrastructure is essential for economic growth, digital transformation, and improved communication services. Industry stakeholders participating in the project described the cleanup as an important step toward modernizing Lagos’ telecommunications network and improving service delivery for millions of subscribers.
In addition to removing obsolete infrastructure, the initiative is expected to encourage better coordination among telecom operators to reduce unnecessary duplication of installations across the state. Authorities believe this will help create a more organized and technologically advanced communications environment.
The Lagos State Government further noted that the exercise aligns with ongoing efforts to transform Lagos into a smart city with reliable digital infrastructure capable of supporting innovation, commerce, and public services. As the demand for internet connectivity and digital services continues to rise, officials say maintaining modern and safe telecom infrastructure has become increasingly important.
Residents have also been encouraged to report damaged or abandoned telecom facilities within their communities to relevant authorities. The government says public participation will play a vital role in ensuring the success and sustainability of the cleanup initiative across Lagos State.
