The Campaign for Dignity Governance (CDG) has commended the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for supporting ongoing efforts aimed at protecting Lagos residents from arbitrary and excessive rent increases, describing the move as a timely intervention that reflects responsible and people-centered governance.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the Convener of the Campaign for Dignity Governance, Razaq Olokoba, said the growing concerns surrounding rising rental costs have become a major challenge for many families, young professionals, small business owners, and low-income earners across the state.
According to the group, the decision by the Lagos State Government to strengthen regulatory frameworks within the housing sector demonstrates a clear understanding of the economic realities facing residents and the need to create a fair balance between landlords, property developers, and tenants.
“Lagos remains the economic nerve centre of Nigeria, attracting thousands of people daily in search of opportunities. However, the increasing cost of accommodation has become a source of concern for many residents. Any effort aimed at preventing exploitative rent practices deserves commendation and support,” Olokoba stated.
The group noted that while property ownership remains a legitimate investment, housing should not become inaccessible to ordinary citizens due to unchecked rent increases and exploitative charges imposed on tenants.
According to CDG, many Lagos residents have expressed concerns over sudden rent hikes, excessive agency fees, agreement charges, and other housing-related costs that place enormous financial pressure on households already dealing with broader economic challenges.
The group therefore welcomed recent policy discussions and legislative efforts targeted at ensuring greater transparency, fairness, and accountability within the housing sector.
Olokoba stated that responsible governance requires leaders to respond to issues that directly affect the daily lives of citizens, stressing that affordable housing remains one of the most important social and economic issues in any modern city.
“Housing is not just about buildings. It is about stability, dignity, family welfare, and economic security. When people spend almost all their income on rent, it affects productivity, savings, business growth, and overall quality of life,” he said.
The Campaign for Dignity Governance further praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for maintaining a governance approach that combines infrastructure development with social protection policies.
The group observed that while the administration continues to invest heavily in transportation, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic development, it has also shown concern for policies that directly impact the welfare of ordinary Lagosians.
According to the statement, the housing sector requires thoughtful regulation that protects tenants while also preserving the legitimate interests of landlords and investors.
The group stressed that fairness, transparency, and proper enforcement mechanisms are essential to creating a healthy and sustainable housing environment.
CDG also called for wider stakeholder engagement involving tenants’ associations, landlords, estate professionals, housing experts, and community leaders to ensure that any reforms introduced are practical, effective, and beneficial to all parties involved.
“We believe sustainable solutions emerge when government listens to stakeholders and creates policies that balance economic realities with social responsibility,” Olokoba added.
The organization further noted that improving housing affordability would contribute positively to social stability, reduce financial stress on families, and strengthen public confidence in government institutions.
It also urged enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies to remain proactive in ensuring compliance with housing regulations and protecting residents from exploitative practices.
The Campaign for Dignity Governance concluded by reaffirming its support for policies and reforms that promote social justice, economic fairness, and improved living standards for citizens.
The group expressed confidence that under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos will continue to pursue initiatives that place the welfare of residents at the centre of governance while sustaining the state’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading economic and urban centres.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated that good governance is not only about major infrastructure projects but also about responding to the everyday concerns of citizens. Efforts to address excessive rent practices represent a significant step toward protecting residents and promoting a more inclusive Lagos,” the statement concluded.
