The Youth Bureau has commended the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the recent approval of 14 electricity licences and permits under the Lagos electricity market framework, describing the development as a transformative step toward improving power supply, stimulating economic growth, and creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs across the state.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the Publicity Secretary of the Youth Bureau, Adekunle Adeosun, described the initiative as one of the most significant policy decisions undertaken by the Lagos State Government in recent times, noting that access to reliable electricity remains critical to the success of businesses, innovation, education, and employment generation.
According to the group, young people are among the biggest beneficiaries of stable electricity because many emerging industries today are powered by technology, innovation, digital services, and small-scale enterprises that depend heavily on consistent energy supply.
“For years, young entrepreneurs, startups, artisans, technology innovators, and small business owners have struggled with the challenges of unstable electricity. The reforms being introduced by Governor Sanwo-Olu offer hope for a more productive future where businesses can grow without the burden of excessive energy costs,” Adeosun stated.
The Youth Bureau noted that the approvals granted through the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission cover several areas, including off-grid generation, embedded generation, metering services, interconnected mini-grid systems, and independent distribution networks.
According to the group, these reforms demonstrate forward-thinking leadership and align with global best practices where governments create enabling environments for private sector participation in power generation and distribution.
The Youth Bureau further observed that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial and innovation capital, requires a modern energy framework capable of supporting its growing population and expanding economy.
It noted that improved electricity access will have direct positive impacts on thousands of youth-owned businesses operating in sectors such as technology, manufacturing, creative industries, hospitality, digital services, fashion, and agribusiness.
“This is not simply an electricity policy. It is an economic empowerment policy. Stable power means businesses can operate longer, employ more people, increase productivity, and compete more effectively. It means more opportunities for young people to succeed,” the statement said.
The group also commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for embracing reforms that focus on long-term benefits rather than short-term political gains.
According to Adeosun, leadership is measured by the ability to anticipate future challenges and implement solutions before they become crises.
“What we are witnessing is strategic leadership. The Governor understands that the future economy will be driven by innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship, all of which require reliable power infrastructure,” he stated.
The Youth Bureau further praised the Lagos State Government for creating a policy environment that encourages investment and innovation within the energy sector.
It noted that private sector participation remains essential to bridging infrastructure gaps and accelerating economic development.
According to the group, the reforms will encourage new investments, improve service delivery, and strengthen public confidence in the state’s ability to manage critical infrastructure.
The organization also highlighted the educational benefits of improved electricity supply, noting that students, researchers, training institutions, and digital learning platforms stand to benefit significantly from more reliable energy access.
The group stressed that improving electricity supply contributes directly to human capital development by creating better conditions for learning, research, and innovation.
“Every modern economy that has achieved meaningful development did so on the foundation of reliable power. Lagos is taking practical steps toward securing that foundation, and future generations will benefit immensely from these decisions,” Adeosun added.
The Youth Bureau concluded by reaffirming its support for policies that promote economic expansion, youth empowerment, technological advancement, and infrastructure development.
The group expressed confidence that the ongoing electricity reforms will strengthen Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s leading economic hub while creating new opportunities for businesses, investors, and young people.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated visionary leadership. The electricity reforms being implemented today will shape the future of Lagos for decades to come. This is a bold investment in economic prosperity, youth development, and sustainable growth,” the statement concluded.
