The Yoruba Radical Assembly has commended the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for leading the state to surpass the ₦1.7 trillion revenue mark, describing the achievement as a powerful demonstration of strategic leadership, economic foresight, and institutional discipline.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Omolola Olukayode, the group noted that the milestone reflects a governance approach that prioritises structure, planning, and long-term sustainability over short-term gains.
According to the group, revenue performance at this level is not accidental but is the result of deliberate policies, consistent reforms, and effective implementation strategies that have strengthened Lagos’ economic framework.
“To achieve this level of revenue generation requires more than economic activity; it requires leadership that understands how to build systems, enforce accountability, and create an environment where growth is both possible and sustainable,” the statement read.
The Yoruba Radical Assembly emphasised that Lagos has continued to distinguish itself as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, not only because of its size but because of its ability to manage resources effectively and convert economic potential into measurable outcomes.
It noted that the state’s revenue growth reflects increased investor confidence, improved business conditions, and a governance structure that supports economic expansion.
According to the group, strong revenue performance also enhances the state’s capacity to invest in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security, thereby improving overall quality of life for residents.
“Economic strength at this level provides the foundation for development. It gives government the capacity to act, to invest, and to respond to the needs of the people in a timely and effective manner,” Olukayode stated.
The group further highlighted the importance of institutional strength, noting that sustainable revenue growth depends on systems that are transparent, efficient, and accountable.
It commended the Lagos State Government for its efforts in improving tax administration, reducing leakages, and enhancing compliance through the use of technology and data-driven approaches.
According to the group, these reforms have not only increased revenue but also strengthened public trust in governance, as citizens are more likely to support systems that are fair and transparent.
The Yoruba Radical Assembly also stressed that economic growth must be matched with social responsibility, urging the government to ensure that increased revenue translates into visible and meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
“Growth must be inclusive. It must reflect in better roads, improved schools, accessible healthcare, and opportunities for all. That is the true measure of economic success,” the statement added.
The group further noted that Lagos’ achievement sets a benchmark for other states, demonstrating that with the right leadership, policies, and systems, subnational governments can achieve financial independence and drive development without over-reliance on federal allocations.
It called on other states to learn from the Lagos model, particularly in areas such as revenue diversification, digitalisation, and institutional strengthening.
According to Olukayode, the milestone represents not just a moment of achievement but a foundation for future growth.
“This is not the end; it is a beginning. It sets the stage for even greater progress, deeper reforms, and broader impact,” she said.
The Yoruba Radical Assembly concluded by reaffirming its support for policies that promote economic stability, institutional development, and inclusive growth, expressing confidence that Lagos will continue to lead as a model of effective governance in Nigeria.
“This achievement is a reflection of vision, discipline, and strategic leadership. It is proof that Lagos is not only growing but growing with purpose,” the statement concluded.
