Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured Nigerians that the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games (NIG), scheduled to hold in Lagos in 2026, will be organized and delivered to world-class standards.
The governor gave the assurance during an inspection tour of sports facilities across the state by members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), led by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade.
Speaking during the visit, Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment, noting that Lagos possesses the infrastructure, expertise, and capacity required to host a successful national sporting event.
He stated that the state government is working closely with the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders to ensure that all facilities earmarked for the competition meet international standards. According to him, the games will provide a platform for discovering and nurturing young talents while promoting national unity and healthy competition among participants.
The governor emphasized that Lagos has a proven record of hosting major sporting and international events, expressing confidence that the National Intermediate Games would set a new benchmark for future editions.
Members of the Main Organising Committee inspected several venues expected to host various events during the championship. The tour was aimed at assessing the readiness of the facilities and identifying areas requiring upgrades ahead of the competition.
Olopade commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to the successful hosting of the games, describing the level of preparation as encouraging. He expressed optimism that the championship would play a vital role in identifying emerging talents who could represent Nigeria in future international competitions.
The Lagos 2026 National Intermediate Games is expected to attract thousands of young athletes from across the country, making it one of the biggest youth sporting events in Nigeria’s recent history.
